  • Day 1: Chicago

Day 1 – Arrive in Chicago

Arrive in Chicago, one of America’s great cities, where bold architecture meets the vast blue horizon of Lake Michigan. After landing, transfer independently from the airport to your downtown hotel — the journey takes around 30–45 minutes depending on traffic. If you’re arriving at O’Hare, the CTA Blue Line train offers an easy connection into the city, while taxis and rideshare services are readily available from both airports.

Once you’ve settled in, head out for a gentle introduction to the city. Chicago’s downtown is wonderfully walkable, and the Chicago Riverwalk is a perfect first stop, with cafés and outdoor bars overlooking the skyline. A short stroll brings you to Millennium Park, home to the famous mirrored sculpture known locally as “The Bean” (officially Cloud Gate), one of the city’s most photographed landmarks.

If energy levels allow, continue toward Navy Pier for sweeping views across Lake Michigan and perhaps your first taste of Chicago’s lively food scene.

  • Day 2: Chicago to Milwaukee

    Approx. 93 miles | 1.5–2 hours

Collect your hire car this morning and follow the shoreline of Lake Michigan north into Wisconsin. It’s an easy drive with wide lake views and possible stops along the way. Kenosha makes a pleasant break for coffee beside the marina before continuing north.

Arrive in Milwaukee late morning and discover one of America’s most underrated cities. Begin in the Historic Third Ward, a lively district of converted warehouses filled with galleries, boutiques and restaurants. Nearby, the Milwaukee Public Market is an excellent place for lunch.

Spend the afternoon exploring the city’s cultural highlights. The Harley-Davidson Museum celebrates one of America’s most iconic brands, while the Milwaukee Art Museum impresses with its striking architecture and lakeside setting. Later, stroll along the Milwaukee Riverwalk or stop at a local brewery — Milwaukee’s beer heritage runs deep.

Did You Know? The Milwaukee Art Museum’s dramatic “wings” open and close twice a day — a small spectacle worth seeing.

  • Day 3: Milwaukee to Sheboygan

    Approx. 60 miles | 1 hour

It’s a short and scenic ride today, giving you plenty of time for detours. Your first stop should be Port Washington, a postcard-pretty harbour town with lighthouse views and Victorian-era buildings. It feels a bit like stepping into New England but without the crowds.

Sheboygan itself has a surprisingly creative streak thanks to the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, known for its bold, playful installations. Later, head out to Kohler-Andrae State Park where boardwalks weave across golden dunes and the beach stretches for miles. It’s peaceful, breezy, and a great place to reset.

Local Tip: Sheboygan claims to be the Bratwurst Capital of the World. Sampling at least one is practically a requirement.

  • Day 4: Sheboygan to Door County

    Approx. 80–100 miles | 1.5–2 hours

Your drive today takes you through classic Wisconsin countryside — quiet farmland, red barns, dairy cows, and wide open skies. Door County slowly reveals itself as you approach the peninsula: lighthouses, marinas, cherry orchards, and little towns that feel wonderfully timeless.

Check into your base for the next two nights — perhaps Fish Creek for its dining scene, Ephraim for its peaceful waterfront, or Sister Bay for its lively marina and Swedish-inspired architecture. Spend the afternoon exploring a few viewpoints or walking along the shoreline.

Fun Fact: Door County is home to 11 historic lighthouses — more than almost anywhere else in the USA.

  • Day 5: Door County

Door County rewards slow exploration. Spend the morning cycling or hiking through Peninsula State Park, stopping at Eagle Bluff for sweeping views across Green Bay.

Another option is to take the ferry from Northport to Washington Island, where lavender farms, quiet backroads and lakeside scenery create a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.

Back on the mainland, browse small bakeries, farm stands, wineries and cafés scattered throughout the peninsula.

Optional Experience: A traditional Door County fish boil. It’s theatrical, communal and a memorable way to enjoy the region’s fishing heritage.

  • Day 6: Door County to Green Bay

    Approx. 50 miles | 1 hour

Leave the peninsula and drive south to Green Bay, home of the legendary Packers football team.

Even if you’re not an American football fan, the Lambeau Field Stadium Tour is an excellent experience, offering behind-the-scenes access and fascinating stories about one of the NFL’s most historic teams.

Afterwards explore the nearby Titletown District, visit the Green Bay Botanical Garden, or step into the past at the National Railroad Museum.

Did You Know? The Green Bay Packers are the only publicly owned team in the NFL — owned by the community rather than a single owner.

  • Day 7: Green Bay to Bayfield

    Approx. 225 miles | 4–4.5 hours

Today’s journey takes you northwest toward Lake Superior, the largest of the Great Lakes. The scenery gradually shifts from farmland to dense forests and glacial lake country.

Break the drive in Ashland, where colourful murals tell stories of the region’s logging and maritime history.

Continue to Bayfield, a tiny harbour town that feels wonderfully remote. This artistic lakeside community is the gateway to the Apostle Islands — one of the most beautiful freshwater coastlines in North America.

Local Tip: Bayfield sunsets are spectacular. Head to the marina for the best views.

  • Day 8: Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

Today is devoted to exploring the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. These islands are famous for their sandstone cliffs, historic lighthouses and crystal-clear waters.

Join a boat cruise to explore the islands from the water, or — weather permitting — take a guided kayak tour into the dramatic sea caves.

Another option is to ferry across to Madeline Island, the largest of the Apostle Islands, where beaches, hiking trails and quiet villages invite a slower pace of travel.

Did You Know? Lake Superior holds around 10% of the world’s fresh surface water.

  • Day 9: Bayfield to Eau Claire

    Approx. 150 miles | 2.5–3 hours

Travel south through Wisconsin’s Northwoods, where quiet forests, sparkling lakes and rustic taverns create a timeless road-trip landscape.

Eau Claire offers a lively creative atmosphere thanks to its thriving indie music scene and vibrant downtown. Walk the riverside trails around Phoenix Park or cross the footbridges where the Eau Claire and Chippewa Rivers meet.

Later, enjoy a craft beer tasting at The Brewing Projekt or explore the city’s growing restaurant scene.

Local Tip: Paul Bunyan folklore appears throughout the Northwoods — the giant lumberjack is part of the region’s storytelling tradition.

  • Day 10: Eau Claire to Madison

Day 10 – Eau Claire to Madison (via Spring Green)

Approx. 170 miles | around 3 hours driving

Head southeast through Wisconsin’s rolling countryside toward Madison. If you have time, consider a scenic detour west to the small village of Spring Green, beautifully set among the bluffs and farmland of the Wisconsin River Valley.

Spring Green is best known as the longtime home of celebrated American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Here you can visit Taliesin, Wright’s home, studio and architectural school, now preserved as a fascinating estate where guided tours explore his life, work and visionary designs.

If you prefer something a little more unusual, nearby House on the Rock is one of the most eccentric attractions in the United States — a sprawling, surreal collection of rooms, exhibits and architectural curiosities.

Continue east to Madison, Wisconsin’s lively capital city set between two lakes. Start at the impressive Wisconsin State Capitol before wandering along State Street’s independent shops and cafés, or relaxing with a drink on the terrace of the Memorial Union overlooking Lake Mendota.

Optional Experience: If visiting on a Saturday, explore the Dane County Farmers’ Market — one of the largest farmers’ markets in the United States.

  • Day 11: Madison to Chicago

Day 11 – Madison to Chicago

    Approx. 145 miles | 2.5–3 hours

Enjoy a relaxed drive back toward Chicago. If you’d like to break the journey, stop in Lake Geneva for lakeside views or detour to Oak Park to see some of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most famous architectural designs.

Arrive back in Chicago for your final evening. Perhaps enjoy live jazz, take a sunset walk along the Riverwalk or savour a final skyline view from the 360 Chicago Observation Deck.

Local Tip: Chicago’s food halls are excellent. Time Out Market makes a great final-night stop.

  • Day 12: Departure

Your Wisconsin road trip comes to an end today. Make your way to the airport, drop off your hire car and begin your journey home.

Over the past 12 days you’ve discovered a different side of America — lighthouse-lined shores, forest highways, friendly harbour towns and vibrant cities. It’s a journey that perfectly captures the relaxed spirit and warm hospitality of the American Midwest.
