Discover Ottawa with Rendezvous Roadtrips

Ottawa might be the capital of Canada, but don’t expect stuffy politics and endless grey buildings. This is a city that surprises. A place where grand Gothic architecture sits alongside buzzing food markets, riverside cycle paths, and world-class museums – all with a relaxed, welcoming vibe that makes you feel instantly at home.

Set on the border of Ontario and French-speaking Quebec, Ottawa blends English and French Canadian culture in a way that feels uniquely its own. You can wander from Parliament Hill to paddleboarding on the Rideau Canal, or go from fine dining to street food stalls in a matter of minutes.

It’s a city that’s easy to explore, full of green spaces, waterfront views, and cultural gems. Whether you’re here for a couple’s city break, a family adventure, or passing through on a wider Canadian road trip, Ottawa offers a perfect mix of history, nature, and urban charm.

So grab your walking shoes (or your skates, if you’re visiting in winter!) and get ready to see a different side of Canada’s capital.

Things to See and Do in Ottawa

Where culture meets the great outdoors – and there’s maple syrup on the pancakes.

Start with the Sights

No visit to Ottawa is complete without seeing Parliament Hill. Perched above the Ottawa River, this iconic complex is the heart of Canadian politics – and surprisingly photogenic, especially when lit up at night or covered in snow. You can join a free tour of the buildings (when in session) or simply soak up the view from the grounds.

If you’re visiting in summer, try to catch the Changing of the Guard ceremony. In winter? Parliament Hill becomes a sparkling wonderland during Winterlude, with ice sculptures and twinkling lights.

Stroll the Rideau Canal

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Rideau Canal winds its way right through the city. In summer, it’s perfect for cycling or walking along the towpath – or even hopping in a kayak. In winter, it famously transforms into the world’s largest natural ice skating rink. Skating past the skyline with a hot chocolate in hand? Very Ottawa.

Get Your Culture Fix

Ottawa punches well above its weight when it comes to museums. Top of the list:

  • Canadian Museum of History – technically across the river in Gatineau, but well worth the stroll. Stunning architecture and brilliant exhibits tracing Canada’s story from the earliest First Nations peoples to today.

  • National Gallery of Canada – home to Indigenous art, Group of Seven classics, and international works. Look out for the giant spider sculpture (yes, really) outside.

  • Canadian Museum of Nature – a favourite with families, featuring dinosaurs, wildlife dioramas, and interactive fun.

  • Canadian War Museum – moving, thought-provoking, and beautifully designed.

Wander Through ByWard Market

This is Ottawa’s beating heart – a lively mix of food stalls, local artisans, and cosy cafes. Grab a BeaverTail (a flat, fried pastry topped with sweet treats) – it’s a rite of passage here. There are also great spots for brunch, coffee, or picking up Canadian-made souvenirs.

Explore Neighbourhood Gems

  • Glebe: Charming, slightly boho, and full of indie shops and cafés. Great for a relaxed afternoon wander.

  • Lansdowne Park: Events, live music, an urban park, and restaurants – a nice mix of green space and entertainment.

  • Hintonburg & Wellington West: The city’s hipster stretch, with great boutiques, bakeries, and craft beer spots.

Get Outdoors

Ottawa is brilliant for outdoor lovers. In addition to the Canal, you’ve got riverfront parks, boat tours, and even white-water rafting nearby. In autumn, the colours are spectacular – especially in Gatineau Park, just across the river.

Seasonal Highlights

  • Winterlude (Feb): Skating, ice sculptures, and winter fun.

  • Tulip Festival (May): A legacy of Canada’s connection with the Netherlands – and a blooming lovely time to visit.

  • Canada Day (1st July): Expect fireworks, music, and crowds on Parliament Hill.

  • Autumn Colours (Sept–Oct): Perfect for a scenic drive or hike.

Eat & Drink

Ottawa’s food scene is better than you might expect from a capital city. Think:

  • Stylish bistros and riverside patios

  • Indigenous-inspired cuisine

  • Top-notch poutine (when in Rome…)

  • Craft breweries and cocktail bars dotted throughout the city

JOEY, Metropolitain Brasserie, and the many eateries in and around ByWard Market are great places to start.
